The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean country east of the island of Hispaniola. Its name comes from the appellation Santo Domingo Español or Santo Domingo Oriental, which was used to differentiate it from the French colony of Saint Domingue in the west of the island, which would later be called Haiti.
